Color Theory

What is the best color for
your room?
Is it red? Black?
Hmm...White?

Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions», said pablo Picasso. Color is the most powerful element, it has tremendous expressive qualities. The various physical and psychological effects combined together to affect our perception of colors. Each color suggest a state of mind. For example, red can carry both positive and negative feelings, somtimes associated with the feeling of energy, excitement and passion or on another hand can evoke aggressive feelings, suggesting anger and violence.

Moreover, yellow is the color of sunshine. This is an optimistic color, associated with laughters, happiness and good times. But be careful, the energy of yellow can become overwhelming when intense. It has the power to speed up your metabolism and bring out some creative thoughts.

When talking about your summer or village house, green pops up to the mind, it expresses life stability, restfulness, peace, generosity and good luck. As blue suggest coolness, perhaps reserve elegance. Actually, seeing the color blue causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming. But some shades of blue expresses negative emotions, emotions of sadness and alienation.

Choosing a certain color is very critical. When you find yourself in front of a large color palette with a wide range of all the colors we ever created, first focus on choosing the neutral color that matches best with your furniture and light conditions, and afterwards, begin choosing colors that add sparkles to your space.

Neutrals:

Choosing neutral colors is very easy. In the family of neutrals you have the yellow base color that usually go with brown wooded furniture creating a rustic and elegant feel. But when it comes to red base paint, it is best applied with a lively colored furniture. While neutrals with a touch of grey look great and chic with a modern style furniture.

Light colors:

Chic and simple are the two adjectives that always follow light colors. It is a pure appearance. It is associated with purity, cleanliness, creativity and safety. It encourage you to clear clutter or obstacles, evoke freshness of thoughts and actions and aid mental clarity. When a light color is used, neutral mood recalls. Light colored walls are perfect reflectors of light, they overload the space with brightness and tranquility keeping the space clean and unified. If you have a small sized room at home or a compact office try to paint it in white or paint the larger surface area of the room the lightest color possible to have a 100 % reflector of light and your space will appear larger.

Dark colors:

A room painted in a dark shaded color is very cozy and moody. On the other hand, authority and strong power are expressed when using a dark color. It can evoke strong emotions, a restful emptiness, potential possibility and strength. It gives a feeling of security and peace of mind. But in this condition, you always have to put a flush of shiny vibrant colors like yellow, red or glowing green to bring your space to life and to allow natural light to bounce off the light toned walls and lighten your room.

Light and colors:

Light is the most important factor you have to take into consideration when choosing a paint color for your room. You have to be aware which direction your room is facing and the amount of natural light as this will affect the appearance of a certain color in the room. Think how light moves in the space creating throughout the day its different effects. When you paint the different colors of your room, a color you chose that matches your furniture, and you find it perfect until the sun goes down and you realize that some areas does not go with the rest of the room, you will be disapointed. This is called «METAMERISM». A fundamental problem of color perception: paint colors seem to vary under different light conditions. It is a very natural factor. The type and amount of lighting used to eluminate a certain space alter your recognition of the paint color.

In that case, it’s not only the appearance that will be affected but also the mood and feel that the colors create. Hence, Try to select your paint color in natural sunlight, it is the ideal perception of color.

For example, in the morning natural light is usually warm and gives a kind of welcoming yellow-orange shade in your room. You will feel very intimate and sheltered at this time of day. As the day moves on, your room will welcome cool, refreshing colors. Your walls will have a refreshing bluish touch, while in direct sunlight, colors usually appear transparent to the eye.

When the sun goes down, a redish light sneak into your rooms bringing a warm, friendly feel.

Therefore, when choosing your wall colors, try to pick the ones you feel most comfortable with.

In this picture, all the walls are painted the same color but they don’t look similar because of the different lighting conditions of this space.
